I only properly learned how to ride a bike recently – although, technically, my cycling journey started about 15 years ago. My cycling-enthusiast cousin and my then boyfriend spent many Sunday afternoons patiently trying to teach me (I never learned as a kid!). After a few weeks, I managed to pedal down the driveway unassisted, which at the time felt like a major milestone. But I never really progressed beyond that. Life moved on, and the bike-riding ambitions fell by the wayside.

Fast forward to last year, when my then 6-year-old decided he was determined to learn. Watching him wobble, persist, and then very quickly master it – with my husband patiently teaching him – was the nudge I needed. I remember saying I should really pick it up again and learn properly.

And then, for my 40th birthday, my family gave me a bike. Which felt equal parts thoughtful and petrifying. A not-so-small part of me worried I’d end up letting everyone down by being too scared to ride it properly.

My husband started me off with the basics – how to start, how to stop (and generally how not to panic!) – and little by little, my confidence began to build. Somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling daunting and started feeling fun. And honestly, I’ve ended up completely falling in love with it. It’s become something I genuinely look forward to – quick rides around our local area with the kids, family rides to the café, or popping out for a small grocery run. Nothing overly ambitious, just easy, everyday rides that have slotted into our weekends.

I’m still very much building my confidence (there’s definitely some cautious, both-hands-firmly-on-the-handlebars riding happening, and I’m slowly raising my seat height as I get braver), but I’m happy taking it at my own pace. I’ve even curated a bike-riding themed playlist on Spotify (think The Bike Song by Mark Ronson, The Push Bike Song by The Mixtures) – and given I tend to create playlists for all significant milestones, this is kind of a big deal.

But I know you don’t come here for my personal growth story – you come for the outfits. So here are seven cute cycling outfits that are practical, comfortable, and suited to the kind of riding we actually do. I genuinely don’t know how people cycle in skirts or dresses (not there yet, though I have a skirt clip on my bike if that day were to come), and you won’t catch me in lycra or joining a 5am velo club anytime soon. If your cycling vibe is more casual rides and coffee stops, these outfits might be right up your alley.
