Sydney rain doesn’t just “pass through” – it settles in, gets comfortable, and hangs around for a while. And when it does, my outfits instantly shift to waterproof mode. Outerwear and shoes become the main event – because nothing kills your mood (or freshly Airwrapped hair) faster than getting drenched before 9:00am. The rain has well and truly set in for the week, so I’m leaning in and sharing my go-tos for when the weather’s moody. Let’s kick things off with the best rainy day jackets:
#1 – This Lululemon jacket with a cosy fleece lining

L: lululemon jacket* (sz US 6 / AU 10), lululemon pants* (sz S), Everlane gumboots (a few years old, very similar option here); R: lululemon jacket* (sz US 6 / AU 10), lululemon tights* (sz US 6 / AU 10), Everlane gumboots (a few years old, very similar option here), Bellroy bag*, Status Anxiety sunglasses*
Presenting my newest wardrobe addition (featured here lol) and the most luxurious waterproof jacket I own. It comes in a range of colours (though the blue version I have is my pick by far), has a cosy fleece lining and it’s breathable (which is saying a lot for these waterproof jackets). I love the boxy cut as it’s roomy enough for my chunkiest knits underneath. It’s worked for all of my everyday scenarios – from running errands, to my walks to Pilates, and even into the CBD for work.
#2 – My rainy-day jacket for hiking (that’s lightweight enough for everyday shenanigans)

L: Patagonia jacket (sz S – US link / AU link), Macpac hiking pants, Scarpa hiking boots, Macpac backpack; R: Patagonia jacket (sz S – US link / AU link), Arket knit (sz XS), Nobody Denim jeans (new season wash linked), Birkenstock clogs, Patagonia bag, Celine sunglasses
This Patagonia jacket (US link / AU link) is on the technical side of the spectrum, it has primarily been my rainy-day hiking companion, though I’ve also worn it as a windbreaker when we’ve been travelling. Lightweight, waterproof, and fuss-free, it’s a bestselling style for the brand because of how well it does it’s job. If you want a reliable option without the bells and whistles, this is it.
#3 – This waterproof jacket (that’s moonlighting as a chic trench coat)

lululemon trench coat* (sz US 6 / AU 10), Arket tee (sz S), Henne jeans (sz 27), Tony Bianco heels*, Gucci bag (review here – AU link, US link, UK link also here), Status Anxiety sunglasses*
Next up we’ve got a rain jacket moonlighting as a trench coat which somehow makes wet weather dressing feel pulled together. The waterproof fabric on this jacket deserves a mention, it’s flowy and lightweight and not at all plasticky. Size wise, I’m wearing a size US 6 / AU 10 here (as I typically size up in Lululemon pieces), but given the relaxed silhouette of this jacket, I would recommend sticking with your usual size.
#4 – The OG rain jacket

L: Rains jacket (sz S – AU link, US link), Nobody Denim jeans (new season wash linked), Everlane gumboots (a few years old, very similar option here), Uniqlo bag, Ray Ban sunglasses; R: Rains jacket (sz S – AU link, US link), Nobody Denim jeans (now sold out), Everlane gumboots (a few years old, very similar option here), Ray Ban sunglasses
One of the first waterproof jackets I bought, my Rains jacket (AU link, US link) is a unisex style making it a relaxed and oversized design. For reference, I bought the size S and my husband has the size M. The jacket has a very minimal aesthetic (it is a Scandi brand after all) but with it being a few years now since I bought it, waterproof jackets have come a long way since then. If I’m honest, the price is a bit steep for what it is and the fabric leans on the plasticky side. I’d recommend the three other jackets in this post from Lululemon or Patagonia over this one.
Rainy Day Styling Tips
- Think in layers – Waterproof shells work harder if you can slip a chunky knit or fleece underneath. It means you can peel off layers once you’re inside without overheating.
- Pick your hemline wisely – Long hems + puddles = instant regret. Cropped trousers or midi skirts are much friendlier in wet weather.
- Go hands-free – A crossbody or backpack means you can juggle your brolly, coffee cups, and small humans without dropping anything.
- Play with texture – Pair matte raincoats with textured boots, or a sleek trench with a chunky knit. Wet weather is the perfect time to mix it up.

Putting those styling tips in action with an outfit I wore to work last week featuring my lululemon jacket* (sz US 6 / AU 10), Uniqlo knit* (sz S – worn underneath), Frankie Shop trousers (sz S), Wittner boots*, Bellroy bag*, Status Anxiety sunglasses*
Let’s discuss wet weather shoes…
I wear gumboots often – particularly for the boys’ footy training and games when the grass is guaranteed to be wet. Mine are an old pair from Everlane that have held up nicely but are very similar to this style from Merry People.
When I’m headed to the office, I skip the gumboots and rely on my usual rotation of ankle boots – I wore these snakeskin print ones from Wittner last week to the office (see above for my outfit) and my go-to R.M. Williams boots have yet to let me down when it comes to keeping my feet dry on a rainy commute.
Stay dry this week folks and as always, thanks for stopping by!
