The trench coat really comes into its own during this time of year. It’s one of my favourite outerwear pieces to style and given the mild winters we enjoy in my part of the world, it shines during both transitional season weather and winter itself. I’ve dreamed of owning a Burberry trench coat for years (I think that’s well documented on my blog!) but the hefty and constantly increasing price tag has sadly priced me out! That being said, my desire to own one has waned thanks to the many options available at a fraction of the cost, and it was only a few months ago that I shared 10 trench coats from both the high street and contemporary labels that all carry price tags of less than 10% of the cost of the iconic Burberry coat. Huzzah!

One of the styles I recommended in my round-up, was the Scott Trench Coat from Sezane which I held off buying for years but curiosity prevailed and I bought the coat earlier this year in February. I was a little skeptical, given all the glowing reviews of this trench coat. It’s also $450 AUD, so while it’s roughly 10% of the price of a Burberry Trench Coat, I still consider it to be an investment. Now that I’ve worn it solidly for the best part of six months, I wanted to share my thoughts in a comprehensive blog post and how I’ve enjoyed styling it as a petite.

Style

The style itself, is classic. It stays true to the traditional trench coat and it’s not gaudy or trendy in the slightest. It features a double-breasted silhouette and it’s cut to a relaxed fit. There are the usual trench coat trimmings, like buttoned tabs at the shoulders and cuffs, a removable tie belt on the waist and a wide collar with lapel. I particularly like the slit at the back that can be fastened with buttons – a feature not typically present in high street trench coats and adds a premium touch.

While the silhouette is relaxed, the sleeves aren’t oversized, which is something I’m on the look out for when it comes to relaxed coats. I find that wider sleeves tend to overwhelm my petite frame (I’m 5’2 or 158cm tall).

For the past few years, the coat has been a signature item by the brand. Aside from offering the coat in different colours over the years, the style itself has remained the same. If you’re not keen on a double-breasted style coat, there’s the Clyde Trench Coat which was recently introduced as the single-breasted sibling to the Scott Trench.

Sizing & quality

The trench is made from 100% organic cotton and it retails for $450 AUD. The fabric is weighty and structured but it feels soft to the touch and drapes beautifully when worn. Notably, the trench coat isn’t treated with any DWR (or durable water repellent) coating, so it’s not water-resistant.

I went with my usual size and bought the size US 4 / AU 8 / UK 8 which is my usual size in Sezane. The trench falls below my knees so it’s never felt too long. The only sizing note to make as a petite, is length of the sleeves – they are a tad long. It would be a relatively straightforward fix by the tailor, but I usually style the trench with the sleeves pushed up, so I’ve never been in any rush to fix them.

I really love how the trench drapes on my body and it’s been one of my most worn jackets during this A/W season. There’s also ample room to layer a chunky knit underneath on chillier days.

Final thoughts

I’ve been wearing this coat solidly for the past 6 months and I think the outfits speak for themselves! I have loved the addition of the Sezane Trench Coat to my wardrobe! While I appreciate the price tag is somewhat of an investment in comparison to the high street options available, I do think it’s reasonable given the quality of the fabric and the classic style. The trench strikes the perfect balance between dressy and casual, and it’s been getting some great play for work and also off-duty.

As always, thanks for stopping by. I hope you found my review to be helpful and feel free to pop any questions in the comments.

I am 155cm, Asian. I like the coat but I wonder if it’s too long for me?

I’m 158 cm so I think it’ll be good! They do have a good returns policy so you can always just try it out to see 🙂
