The capsule wardrobe is hardly a new concept. The idea is pretty simple – a hard working wardrobe made up of versatile pieces that can be easily mixed and matched. The approach to a capsule can vary – you can be totally relaxed about it, and use the “capsule” idea as a guide to build a functional and hardworking wardrobe. On the other end of the spectrum, you can apply some structure and a prescriptive “method” – ie. confining your capsule to a set number of items – like the 3-3-3 challenge, the 5-4-3-2-1 method, the 2 x 2 challenge and the 10 x 10 challenge. I’m not proposing to go through what each of these methods/challenges are – they’re a bit gimmicky, but the idea behind them all remains the same. Given the thought that goes into each piece included in a capsule, you’re more likely than not to make use of all the items. The “relaxed” approach is definitely how I’ve gone about it.
I’m a winter child at heart and love layering up for the colder weather. There’s no better feeling that being bundled up in cosy layers and prepared for what the weather has in store. I’ve put together a winter capsule factoring in my lifestyle (ie. work, running after the kids, sometimes a fancy date night) and I’ve loved the variety of outfits that I’ve been able to style. I wanted to share these pieces with you that’ll hopefully inspire you to put together something similar from what you already own.
Most of the items featured in this post comprise of pieces from my own wardrobe. But where similar items styled have sold out, like my Celine tote for example which I’ve had for a few years – I’ve taken the liberty of finding similar items that channel the same vibe to give you the full picture when it comes to the outfit ideas I’ve put together.
Keep scrolling to see what’s in my winter capsule and the many outfits that can be styled!

What’s in my capsule?
Knitwear
Knitwear is an area I’m rather passionate about. So let me break down the versatile knits I’ve included, starting with some layering options. I like my base layers to be properly warm & fitted and I have a soft spot in my heart for merino wool knit tops. My go-to merino tops (for years!) is this top from Arket and I have this style in six different colours. I’ve found a similar version (also made from 100% merino wool) from Henne which is offered in neutral tones. For a pop of colour, this ribbed knit from Henne has been getting some good action. It’s a new addition to my wardrobe and I just love the shade of red. It’s a fire engine red as opposed to a burgundy red, so it really makes a statement!
The layering knits I’ve included are versatile enough for both off-duty and for the office. They’re ideal for layering under blazers but they also work under chunky knits on cooler days. Speaking of which, the one chunky knit in this capsule is this turtleneck style from The Curated – it’s amazingly soft!
To round out the knitwear category, I’ve got a couple of dressier options that’ll have you covered for those special occasions. This asymmetric knit from Henne has to be my top pick (you’ll see it styled in the photos below). It’s fitted, warm and such a flattering cut. I’ve also got this off-the-shoulder top that’s a cosier option in a versatile chocolate brown.

Jackets
I’ve kept things pared back here, without limiting the ability to style both casual and dressier outfits. This oversized denim jacket is a relaxed cut and a practical choice given there’s ample room for layering. For some structure, I’ve included my go-to black blazer (and the most luxe black blazer I own thanks to the wool & silk fabrication). Not only is it a great workwear staple, but it’s great for events too (see how I styled it here). My Sezane trench coat is a no-brainer in terms of its inclusion (I wear a size US 4), given how much I’ve worn it over the past few months, and for some extra warmth, I’ve included my wool coat from The Curated (US/UK/EU link, AU link here – I wear a size XS) in this line-up that I’ve been heavily relying on now that winter has set in. On the days where I’m keeping it casual, a lightweight puffer jacket is my go-to.

Bottoms
I’ve got all bases covered with the bottoms in this capsule – mainly comprising of pants & denim, but I’ve also included Anine Bing skirt to switch things up. All of these pieces need no introduction – you’ve seen me style these many times before! My cargo pants have been such a great addition for both work and everything else, and these jeans have been on high rotation – they’ve got a great straight-leg silhouette and they’re high-waisted.

Shoes
A lot of the shoes in this capsule will be familiar to a lot of you – my adidas sambas in the brown & yellow colourway, these chic Mary Jane flats, my favourite low heels for the office (you can use “VIRGINIA40” for $40USD off), my favourite tall boots that I bought on sale at the start of the season and my tried-and-true R.M. Williams boots (you can read my review here).
