If there’s one item of clothing I think everyone should have in their arsenal, it’s a classic button-up shirt. It serves as one of the true foundational items in my wardrobe, both for work and weekend, as a base layer for my go-to looks, but also works as a yin-yang to balance out some of the trend-driven pieces I wear. Given how often we rely on our core wardrobe basics, I’m all for investing in timeless, long-lasting options that give you real bang for buck.

Of the many high street and contemporary brands I’ve tried, Power Of My People comes out on top. Jessica and Kyle founded the business in 2015 and ran the brand (including making the shirts!) from their apartment during the early stages. Their considered approach, which they maintain to this day, saw their fan base grow and today, all their shirts are made by skilled technicians in Canada using high quality fabrics sourced from suppliers with ethical manufacturing standards. In this post, I’m highlighting the magical qualities of the handcrafted shirts from this considered Canadian label.

First, let’s talk about fit. They invested a lot of time developing their two signature cuts that form the foundation of their extensive shirt collection, being:

Proper fit

…cut to a standard fit with a curved hem that offers a relaxed but refined look

Wayward fit

…cut to an oversized fit with added length and dropped shoulders that radiates effortlessness

Each of the fits are offered in a wide range of fabrics in both short sleeve and long sleeve options. The names of their shirts are based on the different fabrics used – for example:

  • the Tailor – their version of a classic oxford weave shirt made from 100% cotton cut to their signature proper fit silhouette
  • the Friend – a linen option offered in the proper fit
  • the Story Teller – a cotton / linen blend shirt that’s a nice in between between structure and softness
  • the Sculptor – a shirt with some stretch in the fabric making it more relaxed

I think you get the gist. Different fabric blend? Different personality.

Power Of My People shirt collection

I’m fortunate enough to have two of their shirts in my collection – The Tailor in White Oxford and The Tailor in Lilac Oxford. There’s a reason every classic wardrobe needs an Oxford shirt – they’re versatile and low maintenance, and the texture adds a premium finish. I’ve styled mine for work but I’ve also enjoyed styling my shirts in relaxed looks on the weekend and even as a light jacket during the warmer months on cooler days.

I’ve tried my fair share of shirts across the high street as well as contemporary labels but none of them come close to the quality of the shirts I own from Power Of My People. The cotton fabric is the most premium fabric I’ve ever experienced in a shirt – it’s weighty, warm and breathable and provides the right amount of structure. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from honing in on my personal style, it’s that a good set of basics is everything when it comes to building a successful wardrobe. That said, unearthing the perfect basic is easier said than done, but once you do, it feels like you’ve hit the jackpot. Discovering Power Of My People was like winning the lottery and while I can’t say I’ve met all of my wardrobe “soulmates”, I’ve certainly met my ride-or-die when it comes to a classic button-up shirt.

Sizing notes

I sized up in both of my shirts to a size M, as I wanted more of a boyfriend cut and prefer to roll up my sleeves when styling my shirts. I typically wear a size AU 8 / UK 8 / US 2-4 and I’m 158cm / 5’2” tall. You’ll see from the imagery I’ve included below that it has delivered on the vibe I was seeking! When the sleeves aren’t rolled up, the cuffs fall past my wrists which in this case works well because I prefer they were longer for styling purposes.  I’m always suspicious of those with fitted sleeves and love how the sleeves on the Tailor are a fuller cut, which makes them look effortless with the sleeves rolled up.

Despite sizing up, the shirt fits me perfectly. It doesn’t gape at the chest and it rests nicely on the shoulders. I’ve styled the shirt tucked in, untucked, tied, as a shacket and I’m really happy with all the ways it can be worn!

If you’re giving your basics a chic update in 2024, Power Of My People is worth a serious look. You can take advantage of my discount code VIRGINIA10 for 10% off. Not bad for a wardrobe staple that’s handcrafted in Canada. You can’t go wrong with The Tailor, but if you’re after something more lightweight there’s The Architect crafted from a seersucker fabric as well as The Friend, a lighter linen blend.

OMG. Vee— I bought the Bared sandals, and they are so unbelievably cute! I never owned anything quite like them. Even my husband approved, and he’s a tough one who doesn’t like much in the way detailing or frilliness. Unfortunately, I am a 5’9 ogre who can’t emulate the petites in the world, but you have such lovely style, and I am so glad to have stumbled across your content. Thanks.

Do they have (a) hidden button (s)to prevent gaping/ having to wear an undershirt?

    Thanks

HI there, I am Canadian and never heard of this brand so thanks for sharing! I appreciate your notes as I am about your size and height. Unless I missed it, I couldn’t find whether the shirts you model are the proper or wayward fit? I am looking for a more oversized fit that looks purposefully so, but not overwhelming on my short frame. Thanks!

I’m so glad to hear it! I’ve got the Tailor shirt which is cut to the proper fit, but I sized up to a size M so it could look a bit more relaxed. I really love how it sits on my frame 🙂
