Once again I led myself right into the heart of temptation by wandering around the shops during a lunch break last week. I’d been meaning to try the iconic Mimosa Dress from Aje for the longest time. I initially ruled it out because of the cut-outs. It was like one day, all of a sudden, everyone was wearing dresses with holes in them and I wasn’t particularly too keen.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has bought something online that looked amazing on a (taller and leggier) influencer only to be met with disappointment once trying it on because it didn’t suit my petite frame (*cough* Toteme knit *cough*). If anything, those viral clothing items that are heavily featured on the ‘gram unleash the sceptic in me. That being said, even I found myself doing a double take at the Aje Mimosa Dress which has been around for the past few years and my curiosity was getting the better of me. It’s those damn puff sleeves – so dreamy!
I finally got around to paying a visit to the Aje boutique in the Strand Arcade and made a beeline for the Mimosa dresses. While I was seriously expecting a try-on disaster, it ended up being a love at first sight situation…
Here are the versions of the Mimosa Dress I tried (in the exact order that I tried them!)
#1 – Mini White Mimosa

#2 – Mini Black Mimosa

#3 – Midi White Mimosa
(this one is creased because it had only just arrived and was brought out from the box for me to try)

I’m wearing a size AU 8 in all of the different versions of the Mimosa dress that I tried and featured above. The cut is relaxed and the sizing runs true to size. As for the cut-outs, I was pretty surprised to find that I don’t mind them! The lashings of skin aren’t as prominent at the front, which was probably my biggest worry, and the level of skin exposure on the back is at the same level as what you’d find on a halter neck dress. I’m a conservative fuddy duddy for the most part (ie boring and old) but this dress makes me feel really sophisticated and youthful without stretching the limits of my personal style. Meanwhile, how fab are the strappy heels I’m wearing throughout? The girls in the boutique popped them into the change room for me considering I was wearing my RM Williams boots that day.
I managed to try 3 iterations of the Mimosa dress in ivory and black, in both the midi and mini lengths. While I left the boutique empty handed that day, I couldn’t stop thinking about the dress so I promptly called the Aje boutique the following day and it is currently on hold for me to pick up next week!
Which version of the Mimosa dress do you think I’m bringing home next week? Stay tuned!
Meanwhile, Mimosa dress + R.M Williams boots ain’t too bad a combo, right?!

As always, thanks for stopping by!
P.S. My current wardrobe go-tos and my wedding guest dress edit!
