Everlane is one of my go-to places for well-made wardrobe staples.  And in light of how many Everlane pieces I have in my closet, I’m always excited to try out their new items.  Their much-loved Modern Loafer first released around 5 years ago has had a bit of a refresh, and for the past few weeks I’ve been testing out their newest version – Modern Loafer 2.0 – software updates and all (see what I did there?!).

Everlane loafers* styled with Sarah Lloyd blazer* (sz 8 – use WVW20 for 20% off), Arket t-shirt (sz S), Sarah Lloyd trousers* (sz 10 – use WVW20 for 20% off), Celine bag (review here, preloved here and here), Ray Ban sunglasses

While most of the original features still remain (including the small stacked heel and the stitching detail), the most obvious change is the design of the toe, which is more rounded in the new version. As part of the design refresh, the updated Everlane Modern Loafer is also now offered in a suite of new colours – black, white, camel & laurel (a soft light green). When it comes to shoes, it doesn’t get more classic than a loafer.  They’re timeless and can be worn with just about any outfit.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been lucky enough to have to test drive the Modern Loafer in camel, a rich neutral shade that is a new release hue for the season.

Design & Sizing

The loafers are a polished and elegant design featuring a rounded toe, 1″ (2.6cm) stacked heel and stitching that adds a textural element and pops against the smoothness of the shoe. The upper is 100% leather which is finished on a natural rubber outsole. While the overall design isn’t distinctly masculine, they do give off a real “borrowed from the boys” vibe.

Sizing is always the trickiest part when buying online.  I went with my usual size of a US 6.5 and these fit me perfectly (for reference, I’m an AU 6.5, UK 4, EU 37 and I have wide feet).  If you wear a different size to me, I’d recommend you refer to the sizing notes on the item page as Everlane have gone to the task of detailing these to be as accurate as possible. As with all leather shoes, the loafers felt snug for their first wear (particularly at the top of my feet) and took about a day to soften up.

Verdict

As with all Everlane pieces, the loafers are incredibly well made and exceptional quality. The leather is thick and structured, as you would expect in a well-made loafer, and the stacked heel is finished beautifully with a tan brown sole. It’s hard to fault these.  I even like the sound they make when walking on the footpath!

At $110 USD / ~ $147 AUD a pair, they’re great value, and it’s safe to say I’ve paid more for shoes in my wardrobe that aren’t this well made.

As for styling, they’re a perfect Casual Friday shoe as well as an elevated option for the weekend.  While pre-2020 me would normally go for black, my overall style has become more relaxed thanks to a year spent mostly at home, and I felt the rich camel hue balanced the polish and relaxed perfectly. That said, the black pair would be a great option for work and not necessarily reserved for Friday given how much dressier they look.

For me, the best part about the loafers is that they straddle both the masculine & feminine and traditional & trendy. You can’t quite box it into the one category and therein lies the magic.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope this review was helpful.
