It would be a fair call to attribute a lot of the trends that we’ve embraced over the years to have some sort of utilitarian background one way or another – ie. trench coats, combat boots, overalls… They’ve all had their roots as functional pieces before having a fashionable spin put on them. And the piece that I’m featuring today isn’t an exception: khaki pants (or “ranger pants” as my 8 year old calls them!).
Traditionally, khaki pants are made from a stiff fabric, for obvious reasons – durability coming first to mind. But like any trend, they’ve evolved into the fashion context and are now made in a slew of fabrics that are much comfier to wear.
To me, khakis work similarly to denim in the sense that they’re a neutral and pretty much go with anything – much like your favourite pair of jeans. In that vein, styling khaki pants is a bit of a no-brainer and they instantly smarten up an outfit. In this next instalment of my “One Item, Four Ways” series, I’m sharing with you four of the many ways I’ve enjoyed styling khaki pants this year.
#1 & #2 – Smart Casual
Left: Khaki pants with Reiss knit, Reiss coat (sold out, similar here), Gucci belt (review here), Chanel slingbacks (affordable dupe here (AU) and here), Celine bag (review here); Right: Khaki pants with Everlane silk shirt* (review here), Gucci belt, Celine bag (review here), Atmos & Here sandals (similar here), Ray Ban sunglasses
The khaki pants that I’m sporting in these looks are this pair from Mango. They’re a relaxed fit and are made from a soft, but durable cotton. I took a size US 4 / EU 36 in the pants and I’m a typical size AU 8. The pants sit cropped on the model but given I’m petite (5’2″/158cm), I fold them up a few times to achieve that same look. When I first bought the pants earlier this year, I envisaged wearing them to the office on Casual Fridays, but given the year we’ve had, I’ve been relying on these constantly since working from home (6 months and counting!).
#3 & #4 – Neutral Winter Layers
Left: Khaki pants with The Curated coat* (review here), Acne Studios scarf, Celine bag, Tony Bianco mules (sold out, similar here), Ray Ban sunglasses; Right: Khaki pants with H&M Coat (sold out, similar here and here), Everlane knit, Gucci belt, Everlane flats* (review here), Celine bag (review here)
Styling khaki pants with colour-matching pieces or similar neutral tones can look effortless, and as you can see, the pants have worked perfectly with my different coats.
I hope you’re enjoying this styling series so far and that you’re able to draw some inspiration from these posts. Thanks again for stopping by!
P.S. See the other pieces I’ve styled as part of this series including white jeans, light neutral coloured blazer and the timeless trench coat.
